CSM Hosts VEX IQ Challenge

VEX IQ Challenge

Elementary and middle school students will be competing Feb. 11, 2017, at Great Mills High School in the Southern Maryland VEX IQ Challenge. The competition is sponsored by College of Southern Maryland and supported by local businesses and The Patuxent Partnership.

The competition will be in the format of VEX IQ Challenge Crossover. This format is played on a 4-foot by 8-foot field configured in sections. Two robots will compete in the Teamwork Challenge, working as an alliance in 60-second matches to score points.

The teams also will take part in the Robot Skills Challenge, where one robot is on the field and trying to score as many points as possible while being controlled by a driver; and the Programming Skills Challenge, in which one robot is programmed to score as many points as possible autonomously, with no input from a driver in the moment.

The game’s object is to get the highest score by putting Scoring Hexballs in their colored Scoring Zone and Goals, and by Parking and Balancing Robots on the Bridge.

Teams from all three Southern Maryland counties can register by contacting CSM. Teams from outside Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties should register through Robotevents.

VEX Robotics Competition is the lead organization for the VEX IQ Challenge competition. Partinering with VEX allows the winners of the tournament to represent Southern Maryland at the VEX IQ State Championship. Winners at that event will advance to the VEX IQ World Championship.

The Patuxent Partnership supports the volunteer needs of events like this one. There will be a large number of staff, faculty, and students from College of Southern Maryland at the event, but volunteers are still needed. Each team is required to provide at least one volunteer. Volunteers can sign up on the Volunteer Signup page. The access code is csmrobotics.
