The College of Southern Maryland will host the United States Navy Band Country Current at 7:30 pm, Nov. 23, at the Fine Arts Center on the La Plata Campus, 8730 Mitchell Road, La Plata.

The United States Navy Band website calls Country Current the Navy’s premiere country-bluegrass ensemble. “Country Current is famous for its virtuosity and the fact that all of its performers are multi-instrumentalists,” said CSM’s Coordinator of Music Stephen Johnson. “Its upcoming performance of country-western and cutting edge bluegrass should offer something a little different for those accustomed to the typical military band fare.”

The musicians play banjo, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, fiddle, electric bass, upright bass, dobro, pedal steel guitar and drum kit. In 2011, Country Current became the first military band to perform at the South by Southwest music festival in Austin, Texas.

Country Current performs regularly for the president, vice-president, the secretary of the Navy, the chief of naval operations, the chairman and vice-chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the master chief petty officer of the Navy and numerous other dignitaries. Reaching out to communities both locally and nationally, they regularly perform for veterans, elementary schools, in support of active-duty sailors and on college campuses such as CSM.

Admission to this event is free and reservations are highly encouraged to ensure seating. For information, contact the Box Office at [email protected] or call 301-934-7828, or visit www.csmd.edu/Arts.
