I am seeking my second term to the St. Mary’s County Board of Education. I am a retired teacher and very proud of the accomplishments of my first term. I have some very specific goals for my upcoming term:

These are my goals:

Provide Voluntary Universal Pre-Kindergarten
I think all children should have the opportunity to start school ready to learn.  They will learn social skills that are necessary for kindergarten.
Enhance After School Programs
We should extend the after school programs and after school programs should be available at all schools.
Improve Special Education Services
We should expand services to autistic and other special needs children. In order to do so, we must address the current shortage of special education teachers in our County.
Further the Development of the STEM Program
Continue to monitor the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program and determine if it should be expanded to other schools.  Many children must take long bus rides to reach the current STEM academies.  Introducing the academies to more schools would help the problem.  We could start at the high school level where we already have advanced placement courses.
Right Size Our Classes
We should keep our class sizes manageable in this day of inclusion.
Attract Quality Teachers, Para-Educators, and Staff
We need to hire and retain high quality teachers, para-educators, and staff with competitive compensation and benefits. We must remain competitive.
My teaching accomplishments include:
  • Twenty-four years teaching experience
  • Nominated for the Agnes Myers Teaching Award
  • Sponsored Piney Point Elementary School’s Computer Club that won two computer bowls
  • Led parents and teachers to commissioner budget forums and spoke on behalf of education
  • Helped lower class sizes
  • Helped increase funding for education

My school and community accomplishments include:

  • School Improvement Team (SIT) secretary for ten years
  • Member of Budget Advisory Committee to the Board of Education
  • Member of Citizens’ Advisory Committee for Special Education to the Board of Education
  • Member of Bowie State University’s Advisory Board for Special Education
  • Chaired Piney Point Elementary School’s Publicity Committee
  • Member of Retired Teachers’ Association
By keeping children first we create lifelong learners who can solve meaningful problems and live productive and rewarding lives.

Please vote for me April 3 and again November 6, 2012 to keep children first in our public schools.
