Crisis Services Continue at Walden

Crisis Services

Staff from Walden Sierra and St. Mary’s County Public Schools are making counseling and crisis services available to help residents of the county cope with the tragic shooting at Great Mills High School.

When a community has experienced a traumatic event or crisis, children, and adults may feel significant fear, anxiety, and stress. This impact may be felt by those who were directly involved in the event (such as victims, witnesses, and responders) as well as others who may not have been directly involved. There are resources available for local families as they process the tragic incident that happened at Great Mills High School.

Walden Sierra offers crisis support through its 24/7 local hotline at 301-863-6661.

Beacon of Hope of Walden is open for any students or parents who need to talk, every day until Thursday, March 29, 2018, from noon to 4 pm. Beacon of Hope is in Lexington Park at 21770 FDR Blvd. in Millison Plaza. Get help from crisis-trained staff, youth mentors, and on-call counseling during those hours.

St. Mary’s County Public Schools and the St. Mary’s County Health Department have made resources available for students, families, and the community online here and here. Both sites include information on local crisis support and mental health services plus a variety of tips on talking with children, self-care, and more.

Great Mills High School will reopen for staff on Monday, April 2, 2018, and all students will return on Tuesday, April 3, 2018. This will allow for staff to prepare for students and ensure proper supports are available. When students return, additional counselors and mental health providers will be on site to assist students.

As the community recovers from the tragic events, there has been an outpouring of support for the students and staff of Great Mills High School. The school system thanks the community partners, businesses, and individuals who have offered support and resources.
