Create Your Guardians of the Garden

Guardians

They can be fun. They can be funky. They can be scary. Whatever you think is the perfect scarecrow, make one now and enter it into the “Scarecrows: Guardians of the Garden” exhibit at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center.

The exhibit, set for Oct. 1 to Nov. 27, 2016, will celebrate all things related to scarecrows — the guardians of our gardens — and artists ranging from novice to experienced creative genius are invited to participate. Annmarie has issued a call for entries, and artisans are being sought to participate. Entries also can include farm and garden décor, and the exhibit is open to all ages and backgrounds.

Fill out the entry form and send it in by Sept. 1, and then have your creation delivered to Annmarie between Sept. 21 and 25.

The scarecrows will be put on display in the garden, spending the entire two months outdoors, so creations need to be ready to handle the elements. Be sure to use materials that can withstand wind, rain, and sun, as well as the attention of enthusiastic visitors who sometimes like to touch the outdoor exhibits.

Avoid materials that will degrade when wet, and do not use any craft glue or hot glue – they will not last. When you are finished, or even as you go along building your creation, apply multiple coats of varnish or other non-soluble sealant. Paint over metals that might rust, and varnish materials like fabric or any natural pieces like wood or hay.

If you can avoid using glue, try to go for nails, screws, wires, or other durable anchoring systems if you can. This will help to ensure the piece survives the entire exhibit without being ruined. The strongest pieces will withstand the season, and you’ll be able to take them home for display in your own home after the exhibit.
