St. Mary’s Hospital  turns 100 years old in 2012 and one way the hospital will observe the past is by looking at the futurefuture generations, that is. To help get county school children involved with the hospital and in health care, St. Mary’s is sponsoring an art contest for all St. Mary’s County fourth and fifth graders and an essay contest for the county’s middle school students.  Home school students are also invited to participate.

If you know of a youngster eligible to enter, go to www.stmaryshospitalmd.org to learn more about the contests and to download an application, or call Jeni Irwin in Marketing and Public Relations at 240-434-7766. Students should have received flyers about the contest just prior to their holiday break. The deadline for the contests is Feb. 15, 2012.

The art contest is open to any fourth or fifth grade student in St. Mary’s County and offers students an opportunity to illustrate their idea of a Health Care Hero. One winning entry will be chosen for each grade and the winners will receive a $100 cash prize. The deadline for submission is Feb. 15, 2012 and only one entry per student is allowed.

The essay contest is open to any St. Mary’s County student in middle school grades 6 through 8. For the contest, students are asked to write about why they think St. Mary’s Hospital is Important to Our Community. There will be one winning entry chosen for each grade and the winners will receive a $200 cash prize. The essay contest deadline is Feb. 15, 2012. Only one entry may be submitted per student

Throughout 2012, St. Mary’s Hospital will commemorate a century of caring for you – our neighbors, friends and family members. In the 100 years that St. Mary’s has been a part of the Southern Maryland community, the goal has remained the same. The hospital was established in 1912 by a group of seven men to be a place where people could receive quality medical attention in a setting of comfort and caring. And, while a great deal has changed in health care and medical technology, St. Mary’s is still a place of compassionate, quality care that would make the hospital’s founding fathers proud.
