Big Band, Classical & Jazz: Two St. Mary’s Evenings

St. Mary’s City, MD  It’s going to be a busy week-end for Don Stapleson, director of the St. Mary’s College Jazz Bands and a well-known musician throughout the Washington metropolitan area.

A duo of performances begin 8 p.m., Nov. 30 in  the Auerbach Auditorium of St. Mary’s Hall where St. Mary’s College of Maryland’s Big Band and Jazz Combo, both directed by Mr.  Stapleson, will be playing the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Count Basie. Their joint performance will feature The Beatles as well.

The concert is free and open to the public.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, unique versions of classical music in contemporary jazz styles will be performed by the “Clazzical Jam” jazz group. Guests will hear Mr. Stapleson on flute and his fellow St. Mary’s alum Peter Fields on guitar. They  will be joined by Fred Lieder on the cello. The concert will be held in Montgomery Hall, room 25, starting at 8 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Mr. Stapleson is also an accomplished saxophonist in addition to being a gifted flutist. He performs with his own group, “The Don Stapleson Quartet,” as well as with the popular classical/jazz crossover group, “Clazzical Jam.”
