Celebrate Being a Cancer Survivor

Cancer Survivors

National Cancer Survivors Day is Sunday, June 5, and MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital is joining the rest of the country in celebrating this event by hosting a picnic on the lawn in front of the hospital at 1 pm that day.

The hospital is at 25500 Point Lookout Road in Leonardtown. The event is free.

“Our annual picnic celebrates survivors and families and helps show the community that there is life after cancer and it can be fulfilling and rewarding,” said Joan Popielski, RN, BSN, CRNI, and CCIS director. “This event is an opportunity to celebrate not just the survivors and those living with cancer, but also their families, friends and caregivers.” We honor them for their courage and support them in their efforts to return to a happy and fulfilling life.”

National Cancer Survivors Day was created to honor survivors by bringing attention to the ongoing challenges they face. Also the day shows the world that there is life after cancer. The event is celebrated in communities across the country and even the world. It is promoted by the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation, which supports the organizations and communities who want to celebrate.

The day is held each year on the first Sunday in June. The idea is to celebrate the people who have survived a cancer diagnosis, as well as their families and loved ones, while also inspiring anyone who has recently received a diagnosis and showing them that there is an entire life to be lived after diagnosis.

The day also celebrates medical professionals who treat those with cancer. By bringing everyone together, the celebrate allows people to connect, celebrate and compare their milestones, and truly honor the survivors and all the people who have helped and supported them along the way.

At the same time, the day is meant to draw attention to the challenges people face as cancer survivors. Hopefully, this attention can lead to more resources, research, and legislation that is friendly to survivors to help improve their quality of life.
