Buzz in for Annmarie’s Insectival

Insectival

Summer time is insect time in Southern Maryland, and Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center is celebrating our six-legged friends. On Sunday, July 31, 2016, from noon to 4 pm, buzz on into the garden for the Insectival: Insect Festival.

Visitors will both investigate and celebrate insects of all kinds with games, bug hunts, art activities, and a little bit of show and tell fun. Admission is free for members; $5 for adults; $4 for military; $3 for youth; and free for children 5 and younger. Kids can make a craft home to take home and remember the day forever.

In Southern Maryland, insects outnumber people by far, and they are all around us all the time. They fly, they crawl, they scuttle, and at certain times in their lives they might even slither. Every insect has a story, and every single one has a part in our ecosystem. Some of the region’s insects are always looking for specific plants that provide their food and shelter. For instance, our milkweed feeds and houses the beautiful Monarch butterfly. Because there are so many varieties of insects, visitors will learn about just a small portion of individual insects, but come away with more knowledge of insects overall as they see some up close and create replicas of their own. Come see the beauty of the natural world while learning a little bit of science.

Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Art Center is located in Solomons, MD, on the Chesapeake Bay. The garden includes a walking path through the forest that passes permanent and loaned sculptures, including 35 works on loan from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Gallery of Art. It is just off Route 2-4 on Dowell Road. Hours are 9 am to 5 pm daily.
