Bricks Honor Friends, Neighbors

Family and friends of College of Southern Maryland professor Charles K. Walsh gather by a memorial brick placed on the Leonardtown campus as a tribute to his life, one of the latest bricks to be a part of the Brick Program at CSM.

The College of Southern Maryland has found a way to create a timeless tribute to the people and places that make the region unique. The walkways at all three campuses now have brick areas in which friends and neighbors are able to purchase bricks with names engraved on them, and a recent ceremony at the Leonardtown campus marked yet another brick space for these names.

Foundation Director Jay Lilly, right, purchased an honorary brick to commemorate the 25th wedding anniversary of his fellow director and friend Al Leandre, left, and his wife Lisa.

CSM’s Brick Program pays tribute to some of the people who make the greatest contributions to the region. Names are engraved on the bricks, to be seen by future generations of students, faculty, and visitors to the campuses.

Rané Franklin, chair of the CSM Foundation, said at the April 27, 2016, ceremony that the people and organizations whose names are on the bricks are people who “share in the vision to ‘transform lives, one at a time.’ It starts with a brick, or a scholarship, a room naming or an event sponsorship. That generosity and investment enriches our todays and immeasurably impacts our community’s tomorrows.”

“The CSM Brick Program provides both a way to memorialize and pay tribute to loved ones and members of the community who are our true champions,” Dr. Tracy Harris, vice president and dean of the Leonardtown campus, said.

Leonardtown campus bricks have been laid in honor of Brad and Linda Gottfried; Askey, Askey & Associates CPA LLC; Arthuretta Bowman; former state senator Roy Dyson; Steve, Toni and Vinny Kruszka; Al and Lisa Leandre; Leonardtown Campus Student Services; and Metro Restaurant & Janitorial Supplies.

Bricks that were laid in memory of individuals include George “Fred” Darney IV, W. Wilson Higgs, Benny Carroll Morgan, James Edward Russell Jr., Melissa Solms-Baruth, and Charles K. Walsh.
