Breast Health Fair Set Oct. 18
The breast care team at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital in Leonardtown provides St. Mary’s County with exceptional service and medical care. Learn about the team and get a wealth of information at the Breast Health Fair from 2:30 to 5:30 pm Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at the College of Southern Maryland Leonardtown Campus. The fair will be located in the Wellness Center, Building D.
The campus is at 22950 Hollywood Road in Leonardtown.
MedStar’s Women’s Specialty Center in Leonardtown is staffed by Certified Nurse Practitioner Angela Borger, DNP, and fellowship-trained breast surgeon Dr. Patricia Wehner. Both urge patients to focus on self-awareness and understanding the facts about women’s health care. Having good self-exam strategies and annual mammograms can help reduce breast cancer risk for women. Dr. Wehner said that while medical recommendations are changing, all women between 45 and 55 years old need an annual mammogram.
The Breast Care Team offers comprehensive breast care for women that can vary from routine procedures to surgery.
Self-exams are extremely important, and women should remember that if they find a lump in their breast tissue, they should get their doctor as soon as possible. However, not all lumps are cancer. They may be benign or non cancerous, and simply be indicative of other issues. If a lump is found, the next step is a well woman exam in the doctor’s office, including possible mammogram imaging and other testing if necessary.
