National Recovery Month is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the federal government. The month, highlighted each September, is meant to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders, and especially to celebrate the people who recover. SAMHSA leads public health efforts, under the umbrella of the US Department of Health and Human Services, with an aim of advancing the behavioral health of the country. Its mission is to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness in our communities, according to its website.
