Congressman Steny H. Hoyer headed to Gwynn Park High School in Prince George’s County in February to congratulate four of the winners of the Fourth Annual Congressional App Challenge.

App ChallengeFour Gwynn Park High School students placed in the most recent competition: Ian Barnes got first place with his app, “Break Ball;” Destini Brown won second place with the app, “How Are You Feeling;” Sean Mason came in fourth place with his app, “Math Genius;” and Darius Green took fifth place with his app, “Simple Calculator.”

While at the school, Congressman Hoyer (D-Md., 5th) was able to visit with the students and congratulate them for their impressive work.

“I enjoyed learning more about the innovative apps built by Ian, Destini, Sean, and Darius,” said Congressman Hoyer. “Their apps showcased a wide range of technical skills and creativity.”

He then discussed the efforts of the educators at Gwynn Park, complimenting their hard work and their commitment to teaching students at the school the skills they need to succeed in the work force or in college, after they graduate high school.

“I join in thanking the hardworking educators at Gywnn Park for their commitment to ensuring their students have the skills they need to succeed,” continued Congressman Hoyer. “STEM education is critically important in today’s fast-changing economy, and I am continually impressed with the hard work and determination shown by Fifth District students.”

Established by the US House of Representatives in 2013, the app competition is a nationwide event modeled off the long-successful Congressional Art Competition and is designed to promote innovation and engagement in the STEM-education fields.

The Congressional App Challenge is open to all high school students who live in or are eligible to attend public schools in Maryland’s 5th District. Students entering the competition had to submit source code along with a YouTube or VIMEO video that explained and demonstrated their app and what they learned through the competition process.
