An American Returns to Vietnam

WAYNE-KARLIN-200x200College of Southern Maryland Professor Wayne Karlin will discuss his book “Wandering Souls: Journeys with the Living and the Dead in Vietnam” at 7:30 pm Feb. 28 at the Prince Frederick campus, Building B, Multipurpose Room. The talk is part of the college’s Spring Connections Series and its year-long commemoration of the anniversary of the Vietnam War.

Mr. Karlin’s book tells the true story of an American soldier returning to Vietnam to seek reconciliation with the family of a North Vietnamese soldier he killed during the war. Mr. Karlin accompanies the soldier on his journey, describing the experience from the perspectives of the American soldier and the Vietnamese family.

Originally from New York City, Mr. Karlin served in Vietnam as a Marine and was awarded numerous decorations, including the Vietnam Service Medal, the Air Medal and the Combat Air Crew Badge. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees following his honorable discharge and he has written many acclaimed books, short stories and essays.

Mr. Karlin has been a professor of languages and literature at CSM for more than 20 years. This summer, he will be leading a travel studies program in Vietnam, with information available at this LINK.
