Warming Centers Will Not Remain Open for Blizzard

St. Mary’s County government will not be keeping its libraries or senior centers open in anticipate of a Jan. 22-24 winter storm, closing the warming centers that had been scheduled to remain open as a result of anticipated frigid cold temperatures.

The National Weather Service is predicting a potential for a high impact winter storm in Southern Maryland beginning Friday, Jan. 22, 2016.  As the temperature drops, residents are encouraged to equip themselves and their loved ones for snow, sleet, freezing temperatures, blizzards, and other winter hazards.

The following Warming Centers are available for residents who need to take refuge in a warm place:

Lexington Park Library; 21677 FDR Blvd., Lexington Park, MD, Thursday: 9 am – 8 pm; Friday – Saturday:  9 am – 5 pm  and Sunday: 1 – 5 pm

Charlotte Hall Library; 37600 New Market Road, Charlotte Hall, MD, Thursday: 9 am – 8 pm; Friday – Saturday:  9 am – 5 pm

Leonardtown Library;  23250 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD, Thursday: 9 am – 8 pm; Friday – Saturday:  9 am – 5 pm

Garvey Senior Activity Center; 41780 Baldridge Street, Leonardtown, MD, Thursday & Friday: 8 am – 4:30 pm

Northern Senior Activity Center; 29655 Charlotte Hall Road, Charlotte Hall, MD,  Thursday – Friday: 8 am – 4:30 pm

Loffler Senior Activity Center; 21905 Chancellor’s Run Road, Great Mills, MD, Thursday – Friday: 8 am – 4:30 pm

Citizens should begin storm preparations by:

  • Creating an emergency supply kit equipped with a three-day water supply, food that will not spoil, one change of clothing and footwear per person, one blanket or sleeping bag per person, first-aid kit, emergency tools such as flashlight and batteries, snow shovels, extra set of car keys and cash, and special items for infants, elderly, or disabled family members.
  • Having sufficient heating fuel, as well as a supply of dry, seasoned wood.
