Your Bike Can Be Insured

Did you know you could get bike insurance?
Cycling is growing in popularity, with it now ranking at least seventh among the other popular recreational activities, exercise walking, swimming, camping, fishing, exercising with equipment, and bowling, according to the National Bicycling Dealers Association. And there has been a steep increase in bicycle use for commuting and utility use.
Jay Duke, of Waring-Ahearn Insurance Agency, describes some of the options for bike insurance: It can provide coverage for the replacement cost, including accessories, for sudden, accidental direct physical loss or damage. This could include collision, fire, theft, vandalism, or hitting another object. And there always is a risk when you mix cars and bikes. About one-third of US bicycle fatalities occur in an intersection.
There also are rental reimbursement options, medical payments, and roadside assistance. An annual policy covers bikes within the US, or while in transit by land or air.
Why do people commute by bicycle? According to a survey of 2,400 cyclists by Bikes Belong (now renamed People for Bikes), 95% ride for health and fitness and 82% do it for the environment.
