Sivak’s Honored as Maryland Century Farm

The Sivak Farm in Lexington Park recently was recognized as a Maryland Century Farm by the state’s Department of Agriculture.
The purpose of the program is to honor families whose farms have been in the same family for at least 100 years and continue to be productive.
Five farms statewide were honored at this year’s ceremony in Annapolis.
Lt. Gov. Aruna Miller said she was honored to celebrate Maryland’s Century Farm families whose generations of hard work, resilience, and stewardship keep the state growing strong.
“From Allegany to the Eastern Shore, these families have cared for their land for over 100 years—strengthening our economy, protecting our environment, and feeding our communities,” she said in a Facebook post.
Century Farm honorees have played a significant role in making agriculture the leading industry in Maryland, since they, along with all of Maryland’s farmers, continue to be the backbone of the state’s economy, reads the Agriculture Department’s website.
The Sivak land has been preserved by the Patuxent Tidewater Land Trust.
Maryland’s Century Farm program was established in 1994 by former Gov. William Donald Schaefer with assistance from the state Agriculture Secretary Lewis Riley.
