Ninety percent of health care decisions are made by women, Congressman Steny Hoyer told a few hundred women attending his 11th Annual Women’s Equality Day Luncheon at Middleton Hall in Waldorf, Maryland.

With a pivotal deadline to the Affordable Care Act approaching, Maryland Health Connection Executive Director Rebecca Pearce was a natural as this year’s speaker.

For all the luncheons, Mr. Hoyer has presented speakers who address issues that concern women, which the congressman has always contended are any issue – from economic to foreign affairs to domestic and social concerns.

Ms. Pearce spoke this year about the Affordable Care Act and how it will work in Maryland. The act kicks off October 1 when Americans can begin to study the alternatives for health insurance, and then can enroll starting January 1. Marylanders should go online to the Maryland Health Connection for details.

“Health care is a women’s issue. It’s a man’s issue. It’s a child’s issue,” said Mr. Hoyer. However, 90 percent of the health care purchases in this country are made by women. He said people doing research on the type of health care they need “make the decision based on what mom tells them.”
