5 Stars for MedStar St. Mary’s Clinical Care

Access to Care

MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has been recognized for excellence in clinical care. Healthgrades has announced that the Leonardtown, Maryland, hospital has achieved five stars for its performance in the Treatment of Heart Attack, Total Knee Replacement, Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Bowel Obstruction (for the second year, 2016-2017) and for Treatment of Gallbladder Removal Surgery.

Healthgrades is the premier resource online that helps consumers make informed decisions when finding the right doctor or the right hospital for the right care.

“We are extremely proud of all of our associates and physicians for the incredible work they do each day to provide the best possible care for every one of our patients,” said Christine Wray, president of MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital. “Achieving five-star ratings in five different clinical areas shows that MedStar St. Mary’s is highly dedicated to providing quality care.”

MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s achievement is part of new findings and data released this month by Healthgrades and is featured in the Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation. Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at close to 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions.

“Hospitals that have achieved Healthgrades five stars in these multiple clinical achievements have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional quality care for their patients,” said Evan Marks, chief strategy officer of Healthgrades. “In an environment where consumers have more choices about where to receive their care, a hospital’s commitment to achieving a superior degree of quality for their patients is more important than ever.”

The report shows how clinical performance differs dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2013 to 2015, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving five stars as a group, on average 223,412 lives could potentially have been saved and 162,215 complications could potentially have been avoided. A five-star rating indicates that MedStar St. Mary’s clinical outcomes are statistically better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.

In addition, for the 2017 Report to the Nation, Healthgrades compared hospitals with statistically better than expected performance ( five stars), as a group, to those with statistically worse than expected performance (one star), as a group, and found:

  • From 2013-15, patients having total knee replacement in hospitals with five stars have, on average:
  • 67.2 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with  one star.
  • From 2013-15, patients treated for heart attack in hospitals with  five stars for in-hospital mortality have, on average:
  • 48.8 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals with one star for in-house mortality.
  • 2.0 times more likely to die than if they were treated in hospitals with five stars for in-hospital mortality.
