The locally founded chain continues to operate stores in Charlotte Hall, Hollywood and Leonardtown, MD.

The company was founded more than 45 years ago. Its first two stores operating at the corner of Route 235 and Tulagi Place as well as its Leonardtown-Hollywood Road (MD Rt. 245) location, which continues in operation. The Lexington Park store closed when the Great Mills Road supermarket opened in the 1990s.

At the time of the March 2014 announcement of the closure, McKay’s issued a press release which read, “McKay’s store on Great Mills Road represents the last major retail investment to take place within the central business district of Lexington Park over the past 20 years.” (Source: County Times.)

In addition to serving the basic housewares and home repair, pharmaceutical, and grocery needs of the community, the Great Mills McKay’s grocery store prepared and sold reasonably priced, freshly prepared meals throughout the day. Despite years of efforts by the company, the Great Mills location couldn’t survive the lack of a robust residential economy to support it. Nevertheless, its closure remains a significant loss for the surrounding community and for some Great Mills Road commuters.

The company remains actively seeking purchasers and re-purposing opportunities for the well-sited and significant Lexington Park property.
