The military’s only square-rigged sailing ship, the Barque Eagle, completes its final sail of the season this week, heading into port for further refurbishing. The Barque Eagle serves as a training platform for officer candidates and Coast Guard Academy cadets. It carries 5 miles of rigging that extends 100 feet aloft. It has 200 lines to control 22,000 square feet of sail. The Navy Times gives a salute to the ship, taken as a war prize from Nazi Germany.

The current VA backlog of claims older than four months is 98,535. And that’s the good news. Online Pilot reports it is the lowest number of claims since the backlog was first counted in 2007, and a significant drop from the 2013 record of 611,000.

There haven’t been so few federal employees under 30 since 2005, reports The Washington Post, today making up 6.6 percent of the federal workforce, down from 9.1 percent in 2010. Nationwide, 23.5 percent of workers are under 30.

Lockheed pays $4.7 million to settle charges it used government money to lobby for more government money, reports the Washington Post.

The Navy is looking at full-force uses for their Joint High Speed Vessel and is experimenting with ways to use its large mission bay, high speed and flight deck,  including as a staging base for unmanned aerial vehicles, reports USNI.
