2016 Congressional Art Competition Opens

Jekko Syquia of Waldorf is the winner of the 2015 Fifth District Congressional Art Competition.

“Reflection of My Dream” by Jekko Syquia was the winner of the 2015 5th District Congressional Art Competition.

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer ’s (MD-5th) office is now accepting submissions for the 35th annual Congressional Art Competition.

The competition is open to high school students who reside in Maryland’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary’s counties, and parts of Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties.

The students are offered an opportunity to highlight their talent, and the winner will have their artwork displayed in the US Capitol for a year. This year’s submission deadline is 4:30 pm Wednesday, April 13, 2016.

“Each year, I am proud to invite young artists from the Fifth District to participate in the Congressional Art Competition,” Congressman Hoyer said. “This competition allows students throughout our district to express and share their creative ideas. I look forward to seeing the artwork of our talented students and wish them all the best of luck in the competition.”

Since the Artistic Discovery competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated. The artwork will be judged by a panel of art teachers and professional artists who will select one winner’s piece to be put on display in the tunnel connecting the Cannon House Office Building with the US Capitol.

The winner also will be invited to attend a reception in Washington, D.C. The other art pieces will be displayed in Congressman Hoyer’s Waldorf District Office and rotated in his D.C. office for a one-month period over the course of the following year.
