Nearly 2000 Graduated Through Higher Education Center

During the 2012-2013 school year alone, 235 residents of the Region completed their degree programs from the universities that partner with the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center.

The completion of this school year marks 1,987 residents from Southern Maryland receiving degrees through SMHEC programs.

Among the almost 2,000 graduates are 389 engineers and scientists who received master’s degrees in engineering subjects, and 20 who received doctorates.  An additional 67 individuals received B.S. degrees in engineering.

A total of 1,150 teachers and public school administrators have received master’s degrees at SMHEC, and 20 received Ph.D.’s.  An additional 101 completed their master’s in business administration and in management.

An additional 77 have received master’s degrees in social work, community and clinical counseling, and procurement and acquisitions management.  A total of 150 B.S. and B.A. degrees have also been awarded in education and in business management fields.

The total of 1,987 degrees breaks down as follows: 1,683 master’s degrees, 40 Ph.D.’s, 217 B.S. and B.A degrees, and 12 graduate certificates.

SMHEC began offering courses in the fall of 1995, reaching a total of 37,710 course enrollments in 3,423 courses during the 18-year period ending June 30, 2013.

Ten new degree programs were approved for presentation at SMHEC during the past year, bringing the total number of academic programs to 98.
