Work on Your Rhythm at Dragon Boat Festival
The Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival is coming up fast, and Primary Residential Mortgage Inc. is just one of the many teams that will be competing on Aug. 26 and 27, 2016, in this fun water sport. The event raises money for Southern Maryland Community Resources, an organization that promotes social, recreational, and educational opportunities in Southern Maryland, so people with developmental differences can contribute their unique gifts and expand their potential.
Among its many purposes, the group provides resources and programs for people older than 21, who have special needs and have aged out of the school system.
Each boat in the Dragon Boat Festival includes 16 paddlers, a drummer, and a steer person, all working together to cross the finish line faster than their competition. Volunteers are always being sought, so anyone interested in volunteering on the days of the event can call 240-298-9957.
The opening ceremonies will start at 5:30 pm Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, on the front lawn of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church at 14400 Solomons Island Road in Solomons, MD. A day of races will start at 8:30 am Saturday, Aug. 27, with the national anthem and color guard. The races start at 9 am and will continue until about 3 pm. The races will take place on the Patuxent River in front of the Solomons Island Riverwalk. The marketplace and food vendors will be located in front of Our Lady Star of the Sea.
Sponsors like PRMI make this event possible. Teams and paddlers can raise money together or individually. Friends and families of the paddlers offer their support for this fun day, and the benefits continue throughout the region as Southern Maryland Community Resources distributes the money to programs in the area. The purpose of the event is to raise awareness and understanding between people with developmental differences and the general public.
