The proposed Eastern Shore wind turbine farm is threatened again by concerns the turbines will compromise sensitive radar systems at NAS Pax River, reports The Washington Post. Senator Barbara Mikulski, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, added to the defense appropriation bill a condition to prevent the Navy from inking an agreement with wind farm developers until a study of consequences is completed. The MIT study is due next summer, which would force the developer to miss a crucial deadline to qualify for federal tax credits. The bill has not gone to a vote on the Senate floor.
DoD’s 2014 Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration Challenge (REPI) award winners includes NAS Pax River, reports DoD News. NAS Pax River, along with Fort Huachuca, AZ, best demonstrated the spirit of the program to promote innovative land conservation solutions that benefit military readiness, neighboring communities, and the environment . NAS Pax River received a REPI award of $1 million to leverage the protection of 2,259 acres of forests, wetlands, and farmland, as part of a broader 8,500-acre wildlife corridor area, according a REPI spokesman.
