Wind Farm Delay Possible

The proposed Eastern Shore wind turbine farm is threatened again by concerns the turbines will compromise sensitive radar systems at NAS Pax River, reports The Washington Post. Senator Barbara Mikulski, chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, added to the defense appropriation bill a condition to prevent the Navy from inking an agreement with wind farm developers until a study of consequences is completed. The MIT study is due next summer, which would force the developer to miss a crucial deadline to qualify for federal tax credits. The bill has not gone to a vote on the Senate floor.

DoD’s 2014 Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration Challenge (REPI) award winners includes NAS Pax River, reports DoD News. NAS Pax River, along with Fort Huachuca, AZ, best demonstrated the spirit of the program to promote innovative land conservation solutions that benefit military readiness, neighboring communities, and the environment . NAS Pax River received a REPI award of $1 million to leverage the protection of  2,259 acres of forests, wetlands, and farmland, as part of a broader 8,500-acre wildlife corridor area, according a REPI spokesman.

The Navy’s UCLASS striking power and stealth capabilities were reduced to protect the next-generation of manned fighters, reports USNI News. Several sources confirm that the UCLASS concept changed from a stealthy invader to a lightly armed intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft as a way to preserve a manned version of the F/A-XX replacement for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

The F-35B completed wet runway and crosswind testing, and short takeoff vertical landings  at NAS Pax River, according to Flightglobal.

DoD officials want to prevent the confusion that followed the recent F-35 engine failure that grounded the fighter jets, reports The Chicago Tribune. A memorandum  being drafted suggests ways to better share information and determine which parties need to involved in any future incidents.

The P-8A Poseidon’s inaugural deployment is now complete after a seven-month mission on Okinawa, Japan, reports the Navy Times. The successful deployment marks the beginning of the end for the P-3C Orion, which will phase out over the rest of the decade.

Navy commands will be able to access the results of this year’s chief petty officer selection board at 9 am Tuesday on BUPERS online, according to the Navy Times. The board, which convened in June, considered 16,283 sailors for 3,923 available quotas.

The third NAVAIR Leadership Development Program seminar was held at NAS Pax River this month, reports NAVAIR News. The seminar focuses on business ethics, analytical techniques for decision making, communication skills and NAVAIR’s long-range strategy. Revamped in 2013, the program’s goal is to mentor, nurture and develop the next generation of NAVAIR leaders to work toward a shared vision.

Leonardtown High School students are working on a supercomputing project at NAWCAD as part of a summer internship program in which they build mini-supercomputers, learn programming, and research a case study, reports NAVAIR News.
