Dressers work beyond the bedroom.

It’s the first of the year, so, of course, it is time to organize. And it’s the third weekend of the month, so Vintage Source in Compton is open for business beginning Saturday at 8 a.m.

There is a lot written about establishing the right organizational system to work for you. My take is to position a storage receptacle where a particular type of item builds up whether that is magazines, knitting, dirty clothes or clean sheets.

Start your home’s organizational assessment by identifying where those pile ups are located and how large the storage container needs to be to hold the items without having to stuff them. That’s another premise, make the container fit the need with ease. In other words, make it as easy on yourself as possible.

Seaman's trunk

For me the best storage container is one that quickly stows out of sight. My first choice is often drawers.

Dressers are superb organizational tools. They have been woefully neglected as such by being relegated to only a bedroom furnishing. Absolutely not!

Vintage Source can refinish furniture to fit your style.

Re-finished, painted anew and totally re-imagined dressers can provide excellent  organizational stowage for every room in the house.

Dressers are in all sizes and shapes and are among the most affordable of furnishings for their versatility and capacity.

This isn’t to say a conversation piece, such as an old seaman’s trunk in a hallway and used to gather a half-dozen scarves, gloves and knit hats can’t become the best storage piece you ever own.

We’d love to give you some ideas this weekend or help you re-create that perfect storage piece for you, in a style that fits just exactly where your clutter piles up.
