UMD’s Research Officer to Talk on Technology Transfer
The Patuxent Partnership has announced that on Wednesday, April 4, Dr. Patrick G. O’Shea, Vice President and Chief Research Officer of the University of Maryland will discuss the university’s DoD research, technology development and technology transfer.
Dr. O’Shea is responsible for overseeing and enhancing the University’s innovative research program, which recently has been awarded over $500 million per year in external grants and contracts. Centrally positioned in Maryland’s high-tech corridor, the University contributes to and benefits from the area’s rich intellectual, scientific and technological resources. As the State of Maryland’s flagship university, and one of the world’s leading research universities, it is dedicated not only to education, but to the creation of useful knowledge and its application for the good of society.
Dr. O’Shea has served as Chair of the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Executive Director of the Center for Applied Electromagnetics, Co-Director of the Maryland Cyber Security Center, and Director of the Institute for Research in Electronics and Applied Physics, all at the University of Maryland. He was also a Project Leader at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, and on the faculty of Duke University. He played a leading role in the founding of the Maryland NanoCenter, the Maryland Center for Applied Electromagnetics, and the Maryland Cyber Security Center.
He was born in Cork, Ireland, and holds a B.S. degree in Physics from the University College Cork, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Maryland.
In recognition of his leadership in science, engineering and education, he has been elected a fellow of three leading professional societies: the American Physical Society, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has also been awarded the title of Distinguished Scholar-Teacher by the University of Maryland.

The program will be hosted at Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, Building 2, Center Hall, 44219 Airport Road, California, and Maryland. The doors open, and check-in and coffee begin at 7:30 a.m. The program will begin at 8:00 a.m. and adjourn at 9:30 a.m. This is a no-cost program provided as a service by The Patuxent Partnership.
