Captain’s Message: All Storms Are Different
The Storm of 1933, 10 years before I was born, caught everyone by surprise. It ended maritime transportation and commerce in St. Mary’s County by knocking out the wharves. Here’s a look at the major storms in my lifetime, 1943 to last month.
Who’s Who on St. George Island / Tommy Deagle: Master Wood Carver
A conversation with waterman and decoy carver Tommy Deagle, a St. George Island resident. Deagle recalls the nearly two decades he crabbed and oystered the local waters. He also has carved several thousand decoys during the past 26 years, including the Eagle on Francis Goddard’s skipjack “Connie Francis.”

Access Election Results Online
St. Mary’s election results will be posted online after the polls have closed on Tuesday, Nov. 4, and can be accessed at the county’s website, www.stmarysmd.com.
MTA Changes Commuter Express Bus Routes
Effective Nov. 1, 2014, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) will rename Washington, D.C.-Southern Maryland commuter express bus Routes 903, 905, and 909 with new route patterns.
Health Fair Opens Friday Oct. 24
St. Mary’s County’s annual health fair is free. Flu shots, wellness, legal, and safety information is available from 8:30 – 3:30. A shredder will be on site in the morning for paperwork and medication disposal will also be available.
2014 Maryland General Election Deadlines
Oct. 14 is the deadline to register to vote, change party affiliation, update address and request an alternate polling place.
