This past Friday, Michael Martirano, superintendent of St. Mary’s County Public Schools, met with Joseph R. Urgo, president of St. Mary’s College, and several of the college’s faculty, staff and administration. The meeting, held on the campus of St. Mary’s College, was called to reaffirm the partnership between the college and the St. Mary’s County Public School system.

“In the meeting held with Superintendant Martirano, we aimed to review existing interactions between the college and the St. Mary’s County Public School system and to determine possible new points of interaction,” said President Urgo. “Our aligned purpose and collaborative efforts have proven beneficial to our college students, to the students within the county’s public school system, and to the community as a whole. It is important that we continue to assess how those efforts can be furthered.”

“As superintendent of St. Mary’s County Public Schools, I am so pleased that we have such a very robust partnership with St. Mary’s College,” said Martirano. “The college has been supportive of our mission for our students. With President Urgo’s leadership, we move forward to really activate that [partnership] to a higher level.”

Among many aligned endeavors, St. Mary’s College works with the St. Mary’s County Public School system to coordinate placements for student field experiences, after-school tutoring, and internships. To date, St. Mary’s College students have provided close to 200,000 hours of tutoring and instruction to students in grades K-12 throughout the county.
