Share Your STEM Know-How with Students

Local scientists and engineers are being sought to share their knowledge and experience with St. Mary’s County high school students.

The Patuxent Partnership (TPP) and Maryland Business Roundtable (MBRT) are working together to being STEM professionals to local classrooms. The MBRT has two ways professionals can make a difference in the life of a student: as a Maryland Scholar Speaker and/or as a STEM Specialist in the Classroom.

MBRT provides a training course for professionals, helping them share their accomplishments and enhance the success of students in school, work and life. The training also applies to another program, in which STEM professionals work on hands-on activities in the classroom, demonstrating real-world STEM applications to students.

Local Scientists & Engineers, as well as those working in Computer Technologies and Math, are invited to attend this free training at the TPP offices in Lexington Park, on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2015, from 9 to noon. You must register to attend! Please visit www.thestemnet.com to learn more about MBRT and to begin the registration process.

  • Please click the word “Register” in the upper right hand corner, directly under the orange Log In button.
  • Set up a Volunteer Account and submit it. You will see a page that thanks you for registering, and that informs you that you have received an email with a one-time log-in. This log-in has an expiration date on it, so please respond within the week.
  • After you click, select your own password, fill in a mini biography, your address, and upload a photo, if you have one.
  • The next screen is the “mySTEMnet” page; click “find a training” on the upper left side.
  • Click on page 2, and register for the 10/13/15 St. Mary’s training.
  • You will receive another email confirming that you are registered for the training.

You do not need to be a professional speaker, just be yourself! They provide the training, and you provide the motivation to inspire and excite the next generation of future STEM professionals!

By participating in the training, you agree to be available to speak to up to four classrooms during the school year. The time commitment is equivalent to 2 or 3 half-days, but you would only speak when it is convenient for you and your work schedule. For those going into the Specialist Path, you will be invited to attend another 30 minute training online. Once that is done, teachers will send a request asking you to come to the classroom and assist on a particular day via the MBRT online registration system. Scheduling will be up to the teacher and you for a mutually agreeable time. For the MD Scholars Speakers, you can register to speak at any available session in the system.
