Panel Addresses Challenges of UAVs in Nation’s Airspace

The challenges of integrating UAVs into the national airspace will highlight next week’s panel presented by The Patuxent Partnership (TPP) and the Association of Naval Aviation (ANA), Pax River Squadron.

The panel on “Integration of Unmanned Aviation into National Airspace” is scheduled for  Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012 at the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum.

The panel discussion will begin at 5:30 p.m. following a pre-program reception at 5 p.m. Advance payment of $10.00 per person is required prior to noon, Monday Dec. 10, at www.paxpartnership.org. Onsite registration will be $15.00.  The museum is located at 22156 Three Notch Road, Lexington Park, Maryland. Recommended attire is business casual/uniform of the day.

The public is cordially invited to attend.

“Unmanned aerial vehicles present exciting advances for the future and the Department of Defense has gained significant understanding over several decades,” said RADM Tim Heely, USN (ret), who will moderate the panel. “That experience can be brought to bear, working with the FAA, NASA and other federal agencies, on safely and efficiently integrating these systems into the shared national airspace.”

RADM Heely’s panel includes keynote Speaker Michael R. Erk, SES, Deputy Program Executive Officer Unmanned Aviation PEO U&W, Naval Air Systems Command and panelists Mike Deitchman, SES, Deputy Chief of Naval Research, Naval Air Warfare and Weapons Science & Technology Department, Office of Naval Research, CAPT Matt Scassero, USN (ret), Executive Director, Mid-Atlantic Unmanned Aerial Systems Coalition,  Mr. Ed Wolski, Principal Assistant to Director, Unmanned Warfare, OUSD(AT&L) and Mr. Dave Seagle, Lead, Global Hawk Maritime Demonstration (GHMD), Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR).

Bonnie Green, TPP’s Executive Director, said “The UAV industry is expanding rapidly as challenges are being addressed. We look forward to hearing about the future of this industry.”

“The Pax River ANA Squadron is pleased to team with TPP again,” said Mark Converse, the commanding officer of the local ANA Squadron. “This will be a superb opportunity for the public to hear how NAVAIR and other agencies are working together to bring routine UAS flight into the continental U.S., which will benefit our warfighters as well as civil UAS users.”

The Patuxent Partnership works with government, industry and academia on initiatives in science and technology, hosts programs of interest to NAVAIR and the broader DoD community, and supports workforce development including education initiatives and professional development.
