Prescription opiate abuse has increased admissions for treatment of  the addiction more than 400 percent in the last four years. In our community, the rate of treatment admissions for heroin is up 230 percent.

It is important to understand how this epidemic impacts the Southern Maryland workforce and their families.

Opiate and heroin addictions particularly affect young adults, aged 18 to 35. However, many older workers are vulnerable to prescription opiate addiction.

The Patuxent Partnership will host a community briefing Feb. 5 to address the opiate and heroin crisis in the Southern Maryland region.

This is a valuable opportunity to learn about the concerns Southern Maryland has about this growing crisis and what our region is doing to address it.

Dr. Kathleen O’Brien, CEO of Walden Behavioral Health, will provide an overview of the dynamics of the opiate epidemic in our community and Sheriff Tim Cameron will discuss the law enforcements initiatives to combat this growing problem.
