Nice Bridge Slated for $50M toward Replacement

The Daily Record reported last week that $50 million was approved by the Maryland Transportation Authority board to begin preliminary work toward replacing the Gov. Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge.

The two-lane, 72-year-old bridge carries U.S. 301 across the Potomac River from Charles County to King George County, Va. St. Mary’s and Charles countians fill the bridge daily commuting to and from Naval Surface Warfare Center: Dahlgren Division and Naval Air Station: Patuxent River.

Local commuters are among nearly 18,000 vehicles that cross the Nice Bridge every day. Traffic is expected to reach 37,000 vehicles a day by 2030.

To replace the bridge, construction costs will top $1 billion. This money has not been authorized. MTA has committed $56 million for needed land purchases and design work on the project.
