To shorten the long queue down MD Route 235 during shift changes at the Patuxent River Naval Air Station, the Maryland  SHA  is extending the MD 4 northbound merge lane just north of its intersection with MD 235. The MD 4 Merge Lane will close during the construction.

Beginning Sunday night, July 20, 2014, a temporary concrete barrier wall will be installed along MD 4 to establish a safe work zone.

For the next several months, excavation and grading will take place behind this wall.  Because the barrier will temporarily eliminate the existing merge lane on northbound MD 4, motorists may encounter extended turn-lane queues on MD 235 during peak travel times, particularly during shift changes at Patuxent River Naval Air Station.

State Highway Administration is working with St. Mary’s County and Pax River officials and local media to communicate traffic pattern changes.

The project will also be updated by posts to this project page.

SHA asks motorists to be patient during this phase of construction and to plan ahead for travel through the MD 4/235 intersection during off-peak times if possible.
