Squirming, slimy, and wet, hands-on lessons of practical safety and best ecological practices around the shoreline are again available on two-day student charters summer, 2015, at SeaFruit Oyster House on St. George Island.

Up to six “crew” positions are open to students aged 10 to 14. Activities include wading in the creek, fishing off a boat, crabbing off the pier, and learning to clean a soft crab. Cap’n Jack Russell and First Mate John Fulchiron are both fingerprinted and drug-tested environmental education instructors, each with 30 years of instructional, waterfront, and vessel experience.

The charters run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from the SeaFruit Oyster House on St. George Island off Piney Point, MD, 20674.

Cost is $120 per day or $200 for both days. The charters will run Tuesdays and Wednesdays through Aug. 11-12, 2015. A minimum of four crew members are required for a charter to run.

Crew are asked to bring a lunch. Refrigeration is available for lunches and drinks students wish to bring. Water is available to the students throughout the day.

Dress to get wet. A change of clothing is a good idea. A second pair of shoes is a really good idea. Don’t forget a hat with a brim to keep the sun and any light rain at bay. There are flushable facilities on-site and the oyster house provides sufficient and comfortable indoor space for inclement weather. Life vests are available for all crew, but many crew members prefer to bring their own Personal Flotation Device. All crew members will wear pfds when aboard a vessel.

“I just call it Rivers 101,” says Cap’n Russell. “Come on down here, to the river,” he welcomes prospective crew members, “and learn some stuff to amaze your parents.”

A minimum of 4 crew members are needed for a Student Charter. Dates for the 2015 season are:

Openings still available these dates: Aug. 4-5; Aug. 11-12. Call 240-434-1385 or e-mail Jack Russell for more information and reservations.
