The Independent Insurance Agents of Maryland opened free licensing classes to US veterans.

The free classes for vets is the organization’s way to encourage the men and women who have served the United States at home and abroad to consider an insurance career as they re-enter civilian life.

Jay Duke, State Chairman for the Independent Insurance Agents of Maryland, said the organization recognized the prevalence and importance of the military personnel in the State of Maryland.  “And while we wished to thank the returning vets, we also realize that many veterans have learned and exhibited the combination of independence and discipline that can make you successful in the insurance field. The IIAM wanted to make this opportunity available to do both of these things. Thank the vets and make available a career path for their future civilian careers.”

So the company decided to offer free classes for vets to prepare them for the insurance licensing examination.

Mr. Duke, owner of the Waring-Ahearn Insurance Agency in Leonardtown, MD, knows of what he speaks. His office is located a few miles north of  NAS Patuxent River and within commuting distance to both NSF Indian Head and NSF Dahlgren.

“These men and women are exactly who we want to welcome home into our communities,” Mr. Duke said of the Independent Insurance Agents of Maryland sponsored property/casualty licensing free classes for vets.

The licensing program is a one week, eight-hour per day program. It will prepare vets for the Maryland State licensing examination. The IIAM will offer two sessions. The first session will be held the week of May 11th, the second the week of September 28th . Funding for the program is being provided by the Independent Insurance Agents of Maryland’s Scholarship/Education Fund.

The program will include the classes and books. The veteran will be required to pay for their State Examination, but will be reimbursed for a passing grade.

“The IIAM goal is for its member agents to provide vets who pass the licensing examination a probationary employment or  paid internship,” said Mr. Duke. “We will be requesting resumes prior to the start of class so that upon successful completion and the candidate obtaining a license, our agents will have the information they need to make an informed decision.”
