Get a Science Fair Mentor

Posted for The Patuxent Partnership

NAVAIR/NAWCAD wants to connect Engineers and Scientists in both journeyman and senior positions as Mentors for high school students who are participating in the St. Mary’s County Science and Engineering Fair.

The Mentors will help motivate the students to think critically, follow the scientific method, and give presentations as well as provide knowledge of testing and evaluation skills, help to navigate the logistics of the Science Fair, and assist with providing resources for higher technical questions.

Students and Mentors will be matched on Science Fair category, location, and additional relevant experience. After the teachers, parents, students, and mentors meet at the Kick-Off event, the mentors and students will meet at one of the three Public Libraries in the months leading up to the Feb. 7, 2015 St. Mary’s County Science and Engineering Fair.

Mentors will have one student. There are two events in October and the organizers of the NAVAIR/NAWCAD Science Fair Mentor Program suggest six one- to two-hour sessions during the school year will be required. To register as a mentor contact one of the co-founders, Kristina Dronenburg (301) 757-8487 [email protected] or Bethany Schaeffer (301) 342-8525 [email protected] and they will provide you with a registration link. Registration is free but closes September 19!

Students in grades 9-12 can apply. This includes students in Public School, KCA, SMR, and Homeschoolers. After you have picked your project
topic, contact your science teacher or Kristina Dronenburg or Bethany Schaeffer and they will provide you with a copy of the application. Fill it
out and sign the back page, then return it to your Science Fair coordinator listed on the application. Applications due by September 30!
