Funding Approved for Third Building

Third building

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer praised the release of more than $3 million, included in the Maryland Fiscal Year 2017 Budget, for a third building at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center.

The money will be used for planning and design of the building, which will be used as the University of Maryland Academic and Research Center.

“I’m pleased that the Governor included funding for the University System of Maryland Academic and Research Center, known as the ‘third building,’ in the Fiscal Year 2017 budget unveiled yesterday. The third building is a partnership among the University System of Maryland, the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center, and the Southern Maryland Navy Alliance. A third building at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center is important to economic growth in Southern Maryland and across the state. This project has the potential to establish a highly skilled workforce to meet the needs of the Patuxent River Naval Air Station; the Naval Service Warfare Center, Indian Head; and the University of Maryland Unmanned Aircraft Systems Test Site. I look forward to working with the Governor and our legislative leaders to ensure this project is on track to be completed.”

The Southern Maryland Higher Education Center in California, Md., is currently two buildings. The center offers more than 90 graduate university degree programs and 13 bachelor degree programs. The center has partnerships with 10 universities in the region.

The University System of Maryland recently published a press release about the third building, saying it would address multiple needs in the region for higher education. It will offer more classroom and laboratory space, supporting the research and development needs at Patuxent River Naval Air Station and more.
