University of Zurich Public Health Physicians have just published a study that documents the impact of many behavioral factors on life expectancy. The study focused on tobacco smoking, alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity and an unhealthy diet and their impact on life expectancy. With 16,721 participants the study controlled for both social and biological factors, and demonstrated that smokers had a 57% higher risk of dying prematurely, and that for each aforementioned risk factor the risk of premature death increased independently by 15%.
