Discount Liquors Seeks to Replace A&W

Posted for Lexington Park Business and Community Association

An application for a Discount Liquors to replace the A&W restaurant on Great Mills Road in Lexington Park, MD, will be heard at 1 pm today, Jan. 8, by the  St. Mary’s County Alcohol Beverage Board.

The board meets in the county commissioners’ meeting room in the Chesapeake Building 41770 Baldridge St., Leonardtown, MD.

Robin Finnacom, acting Economic Development Director, said her understanding was that the application was in order and would likely pass without strong community opposition.

Some officials and organizations involved with revitalization efforts in Lexington Park, MD, have gone on record opposing the application. Some sent letters to the Alcohol Beverage Board based upon the template printed below and provided through the Lexington Park Business and Community Development Association.

Regarding:      Application of Waqar A. Qureshi & Shashidhar Bhetwal to purchase a Class A-1 BWL license & t/a Discount Liquors (Atlantic, LLC), 21591 Great Mills Rd., Lexington Park, MD 20653

Chairman Saldana and Members of the Alcohol Board:

I am writing to request that you oppose the application to establish a discount liquor store at the site of the A & W Restaurant located at 21591 Great Mills Road. The Great Mills Road corridor is a State and County designated revitalization area. As such, we are working hard to reduce crime and improve community services and infrastructure along and surrounding Great Mills Road. This is a multi-year initiative that takes the combined focus of local government, property and business owners, members of the Lexington Park Business and Community Association, the St. Mary’s County Community Development Corporation, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, Walden Sierra, the Three Oaks Center, Housing Authority of St. Mary’s County and countless other individuals and organizations.

The Great Mills Road corridor does not need another liquor store! To add to the number of liquor stores in this community will further undermine prospects for commercial and community revitalization of Lexington Park. We appeal to you to deny this application as it is not in the best interest of the citizens of St. Mary’s County to further erode the economic integrity of the Great Mills Road corridor.
