Addressing a stellar audience at the “Southern MD Regional Update: Innovation, Diversification, Education and Anchors,” VADM David Dunaway spelled out the personnel cuts and “journeymen” personnel needs facing NAS:Patuxent River.

There will be some personnel trimming, he said, but natural attrition and the growing need for STEM-inspired hires in Naval aviation will continue to serve as a positive impact in Southern Maryland despite reduced overall numbers in the military and its civilian labor pool.

Hearing the message in the audience were Congressman Steny Hoyer, Speaker of the MD House of Delegates Michael Busch, MD Delegate John Bohanan, the technical director of the Naval Surface Warfare Center at Indian Head, the secretary of MD Business and Economic Development, and heads of the University of Maryland and College of Southern Maryland, as well as the region’s industry leaders.

NAVAIR applauds the educational growth the community seeks to develop in this region, VADM Dunaway said. The base needs and relies upon the region’s educational efforts to fill government jobs in technology, engineering and innovation. Continually improving educational opportunities, the admiral said, have resulted in multiple generations making their careers at NAS:Patuxent River.
