This month’s Southern Maryland Innovation and Technology Meet-Up is hosted again at Sabre Systems, Inc., with presenters to discuss Companies Founded on Technologies from Maryland Universities and How to Fund Them.

Come see how projects started in research and university environments convert to successful companies!

Presenters include:
Gilmer Blankenship, University of Maryland Dept. of Electrical & Computer Engineering
Jennifer Hammacher, TEDCO Maryland Innovation Initiative

Mr. Gilmer is the model Engineer-Gone-Entrepreneur whom we want to get to know in Southern Maryland!  He has repeatedly taken his research interests and turned them into businesses with great success.

‘Gil’ holds the coveted position of Co-Founder for at least the following businesses:

• Techno-Sciences, Inc. (TSi) – remote monitoring for Satellite-Aided Search and Rescue Systems
• TRX Systems – advanced electronics for personnel location and tracking in GPS denied areas
• E14 Technologies Pvt. Ltd – embedded and control systems solutions for pharmaceuticals
• Innovital Systems, Inc. – implantable respirators for patients with diminished diaphragm capacity
• Awarables, Inc. – wearable technology for sleep health applications

The resultant awards are too numerous to list in totality.  TSi alone, in 2009, 2010 and 2011, was recognized by Deloitte as one of the 500 fastest growing technology companies in the US and selected in 2012 as the High Technology Company of the Year in the State of Maryland.

In 2008 TRX Systems was selected as the Maryland Homeland Security Incubator Company of the Year and won the $500,000 Global Security Challenge competition in Londonthe same year. Of note, Gil’s most recent research focuses on Autonomy.

In addition to exploring Southern Maryland commercialization opportunities while he is here (Come Ready to Share!), Gil will highlight autonomous technologies that might be available for licensing from the University of Maryland System.

Finally, Gil knows building these successful business takes great people and solid resources.  So we’ve designed the program to make sure that there’s plenty of opportunity to learn and discuss FUNDING PROGRAMS available to YOU to make your own business a success!

Jennifer Hammaker will discuss TEDCO’s Maryland Innovation Initiative (MII). The MII is a $5.8 million program investing in commercialization and start-up companies spinning out of five participating universities: Johns Hopkins University, the University of Maryland College Park, Baltimore and Baltimore County campuses and Morgan State University.

Ashley Chapman will discuss the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) program, which funds collaborative R&D projects between Maryland companies and University System of Maryland faculty. As you might imagine, Gil has been awarded 7 MIPs awards to date.  He also serves as the liaison between entrepreneurs and faculty for the MII program.

You can expect a tightly coordinated program from the group on April 16 since they already work together so well!

Doors Open at 5:45 pm.  Program begins promptly at 6 pm.  Please note that the doors to the building will lock automatically at 6:30 pm.  Happy Hour to follow at The Tides!  We’ll see you there!
