Lexington Park Volunteer Rescue Squad broke ground this week for its new building next to the library on the new FDR Blvd.

The new rescue squad station contributes toward the creation of a civic complex on FDR Blvd., which already is home to the Lexington Park branch of the St. Mary’s County Library and the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and Social Hall.

The new station will include four drive-through apparatus bays, large meeting and training areas, and expanded office spaces.  The construction project is being managed by Gardiner & Gardiner Construction. Donna Voorhaar is chair of the LPVRS Building Committee.

Plans for the rescue squad’s current headquarters on Great Mills Road are to renovate the facility into a full-service sheriff’s station. The welcoming of a full-service law enforcement facility in Lexington Park prompted the Lexington Park Business and Community Association to dedicate its upcoming May 2014 parade to the sheriff.

The FDR Blvd. connection from Great Mills Road to the Lexington Park library and the land where the rescue squad is building are the result of a gift from the Robert Gabrelcik family. His widow, Joyce Gabrelcik, was honored at the groundbreaking ceremony this week.
