Classical Sax and World Dance Come to St. Mary’s College

On Friday, Feb. 15, starting at 8 p.m., Brian Utley, saxophone professor at the Blair School of Music of Vanderbilt University, will join Eliza Garth, pianist and member of the St. Mary’s College music faculty, for an evening of classical music.

The program features music by Pierre Sancan, Jacob ter Veldhuis (also known as Jacob TV), Stephen Lias, and David Froom, chair of the St. Mary’s College Music Department. The concert will be at the Auerbach Auditorium in St. Mary’s Hall. It is free and open to the public.

Later this month, the Theater, Film, and Media Studies Department (TFMS) at St. Mary’s College of Maryland presents “On the Move! Dance for the 21st Century.”

The dance concert, performed in the college’s Bruce Davis Theater, opens on Wednesday, Feb. 27, and will run through Sunday, March 3. Each performance will start at 8 p.m.

“On the Move!” was conceived, directed, and choreographed by Assistant Professor Leonard Cruz. Cruz received his B.A. in dance and M.A. in world arts and cultures from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an M.F.A. in performance and choreography from the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, where he is currently a Ph.D. candidate in urban education. Cruz specializes in traditional dance/movement, world dance, modern dance, improvisation, and Pacific Island style dance. He is also currently active in the Leonard Cruz Tanztheater of Essen Germany, where he teaches, choreographs, and performs annually.
