The third week of SMHEC’s Bridges to the World International Film Series focuses on family. On February 19, SMHEC will present a screening of Mabul (The Flood).

The film series is a statewide, month-long initiative in recognition of  Maryland’s global reach and a reflection of those connections here. Each film is sponsored by its respective country. Countries include Ukraine, Chile, Israel, China and Slovenia. Click for the complete film schedule.

Mabul does not explore politics, ethnic conflicts, religious issues, social struggles, or economic concerns, but rather focuses on family. The movie, based on a short film by Guy Nattiv in 2002, is primarily a coming of age drama about a young boy, weeks away from his Bar Mitzva. Insecure about his appearance, with estranged and unhappy parents Yoni is being bullied at school and must endure Torah sessions with his rabbi. Now his autistic younger brother, discarded many years ago to an institution, returns to the family and Yoni must deal with the changing dynamics of his family. Is it possible that something better may lay on the other side of adversity? Will he find a way to heal his family?

With an exceptional cast, nominated for multiple awards, this film will capture your heart. Ronit Elkabetz (Miri) is a highly regarded actress in both Israeli and French cinema, and has been nominated for seven Ophir Awards (the Israeli equivalent of the Academy Awards), winning three. Micheal Moshonov (Tomer) is a three time winner of the Ophir for Best Actor, and worked extensively with young adults on the autism spectrum to immerse himself into his role. Yoav Rotman (Yoni) was nominated for a Best Actor for his feature film debut in this film.
