Library Deputy Director Mary Anne Bowman has been named Acting Director of the St. Mary’s County Library effective Sept. 5. Ms. Bowman will serve until a permanent director is selected.

Ms. Bowman has worked for the library since 1998, when she started as a reference supervisor at the Charlotte Hall branch. Since then she has held several positions with the library, including reference coordinator, electronic services coordinator, branch manager of the Charlotte Hall and Lexington Park branches, and staff development coordinator. In 2014, she was appointed to the position of deputy director.

Ms. Bowman is taking on the acting director position upon the retirement of the current director, Kathleen Reif. Ms. Reif has been the St. Mary’s County Library Director since 2003.

The Library Board has selected the search firm Bradbury Associates/Gossage Sager Associates to assist with the search for its next Director.

St. Mary’s County Library has three locations, in Charlotte Hall, Lexington Park and Leonardtown. The library works to be an active member of the community through collaboration and participation in community events and organizations. The board and staff want to create a place where everyone in the community feels welcome and can come as an individual or part of a group. They work to provide friendly, courteous and knowledgeable staff who provide convenient and responsive services.

At the top of the library’s list of values is reading. The St. Mary’s County Library website states that the library board and staff believe in the power of reading and are committed to building a collection which meets the interests and needs of customers.

The Charlotte Hall and Leonardtown branches are open Monday through Saturday. The Lexington Park branch is open seven days a week.
