Bohanan Touts EARN Maryland to NAACP

 Posted for Del. John Bohanan

During a recent meeting of the St. Mary’s County chapter of the NAACP, Maryland Delegate John L. Bohanan described ways communities and individual could developed their visions for themselves and their neighborhoods into state laws and programs to meet their needs.

In the video below Del. Bohanan mentions the new EARN Maryland program, which he intends to expand into Southern Maryland. In particular, Del. Bohanan gives a shout-out to Jeff Burroughs who has offered workforce development ideas that the delegate believes need to be pursued. In particular he mentioned the new EARN program which is under-utilized in Southern Maryland.

EARN Maryland is state-funded to help businesses cultivate the skilled workforce needed to compete in today’s global market. The competitive workforce development grant program is industry-led and regionally focused. But, according to Del. Bohanan, not yet sufficiently utilized in Southern Maryland. earnMDlogosmall

The program institutes a proven strategy,  flexible and innovative, designed to provide Maryland employers with the talent  to compete and grow in an ever-changing 21st century economy.

EARN Maryland aims to:

  • Address the demands of businesses by focusing intensively on the workforce needs of a specific industry sector over a sustained period.
  • Address the needs of workers by creating formal career paths to good jobs, reducing barriers to employment, and sustaining or growing middle class jobs.
  • Encourage mobility for Maryland’s most hard-to-serve jobseekers through job readiness training that may include GED preparation, occupational skills development, literacy advancement, and transportation and child care components.

EARN Maryland invests in strategic industry partnerships from key economic sectors in every region. These partnerships coordinate educational, workforce and economic development initiatives to address the multiple needs of companies, starting with the training of skilled workers. Once formed, the partnerships will develop plans to train and educate workers – and place them in meaningful employment. For more information about EARN Maryland, please email [email protected].
