Del. John BohananDel. John Bohanan appeared tired but happy Wednesday morning as he took to the podium at The Patuxent Partnership’s annual meeting at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center in California, Maryland.

Del. Bohanan has served 19 years as an adviser to Congressman Steny Hoyer, who achieved re-election Tuesday with the renewed help of St. Mary’s County.

“On his behalf, thank you very much,” Del. Bohanan told the audience of leaders of the Naval Air Station Patuxent River contracting community. “We had a turnaround in this county, and it was very significant.”

When Rep. Hoyer was re-elected in 2010, he won the 5th District with 64 percent of the vote. However, his Republican challenger, Charles Lollar, won St. Mary’s County with 17,951 votes (57 percent) to Rep. Hoyer’s 13,327 votes (42 percent).

Rep. Hoyer again won his district Tuesday by a decisive 69 percent. According to the unofficial results, not counting provisional and absentee ballots, Republican challenger Del. Tony O’Donnell picked up an extra 1,349 votes for a total of 19,300 (47 percent) in St. Mary’s County. But Rep. Hoyer’s support surged to 22,761 votes (53 percent), despite majority voter support in the county for Republican presidential and Senate candidates.

With the election over, Mr. Bohanan said the picture has become clearer for Southern Maryland’s economic growth.

“It sort of begins to solidify our future,” he said. “Now we know exactly who we’re going to be dealing with at the federal level.”

Mr. Bohanan said the county has been on an upward slope for for a long time, enjoying growth in military spending. But spending reductions are coming. However, the county can continue to enjoy prosperity if it continues to work hard.

“The way that we do that is roll up the shirt sleeves and work together,” Del. Bohanan said. “We have the opportunity to become one of the best communities in the country.”

Del. Bohanan said the county needs to focus on improving science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in public schools and improve access to higher education.

“We can put together a world-class STEM program,” Del. Bohanan said. “The U.S. Navy needs higher education as a partner.”
