Carolyn Egeli's Valley Lee Studio

Artist Carolyn Egeli discusses technique from the home and studio she built on the shores of Herring Creek in Valley Lee, Maryland.

When you turn down the long tree-lined lane, you feel that you are entering a very special place where art is a way of life. The quality of light is striking as you make your way to the studio.

The next sensation is being in the midst of beauty, the sustaining beauty one finds in nature. Out the window you can see across the lawn shaded by mature trees to the headwaters of the creek, the wild shore, a dock or two jutting out, eagles defining their territory to the osprey, and blue herons gliding across the expanse of water. Then, you see the work on the walls around you, and sense clearly how Ms. Egeli’s reverence for beauty and its relationship to light reveals itself in the masterfully rendered portraits, landscapes, sailing ships, and still-life studies.

Here she talks about technique in general and some specifics applied to the painting she’s working on.
