9th Annual Patuxent Defense Forum

The 9th Annual Patuxent Defense Forum, co-sponsored by The Patuxent Partnership and The Center for the Study of Democracy, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Wednesday, April 30, 2014

“Challenges for the U.S. and NATO in Promoting Middle East Stability and Security”

Recent political developments in the Middle East are certain to reshape future strategic relations between states in the region, with important implications for the U.S., NATO and other regional actors.  The withdrawal of U.S. troops from both Iraq and Afghanistan suggest new strategic relations between the U.S. and states in the region.  Instability and war in Syria continues to threaten state security and regional economic development, while piracy is an ongoing menace on shipping routes in the region.  These, and other challenges, require policymakers to rethink regional military and security strategies to help foster greater stability.  This forum will bring together experts from the United States, the Middle East and Europe to discuss how NATO can encourage greater cooperation, (i) how the U.S. can encourage practical maritime and military strategies and (ii) how the U.S. can achieve long term sustainable security with partners in the region.
